Find This Useful?
Job descriptions are sometimes viewed as a document to create, file away, and revisit only when there’s a problem. But when they’re done well, they are much more than that.
A clear job description provides a foundation for effective working relationships. It helps employees understand their responsibilities, priorities, and what success looks like in their role, while giving managers a clear framework for supporting, developing, and recognising performance.
So, what makes a good job description?
A useful JD should provide clarity around the purpose of the role, key responsibilities, and the expectations that come with it. Depending on the role, this might be structured as a list of activities, broader areas of ownership, or a combination of both.
The value comes from creating shared understanding. When expectations are clear from the outset, employees are better placed to perform confidently, and managers have a stronger basis for meaningful conversations around feedback, development, and performance.
A job description shouldn’t be a document that sits untouched in a folder – it should be a practical tool that supports both the employee and the business.
